Reel sizes like 1000, 2500 or 10000 refer to the spool's line capacity — bigger number, more line and more drag. Matching the size to your rod and target species is what makes a combo feel right.
Size guide
- 1000–2500 — bream, whiting, trout and light estuary work. Pair with 2–4kg rods and 4–10lb line.
- 2500–4000 — the all-rounder range: flathead, bass, snapper on plastics. Pair with 3–6kg rods, 8–15lb braid.
- 4000–6000 — bigger snapper, mulloway, pelagics and offshore jigging. Pair with 5–10kg rods, 20–40lb braid.
- 8000–14000 — serious offshore: kingfish, tuna, reef. Pair with PE3–PE6 rods.
- 20000+ — game and heavy jigging territory.
Gear ratios
The letters after the size tell you the retrieve speed: HG (high gear) and XG (extra high) retrieve more line per crank — great for fast-moving lures; PG (power gear) gives more torque for cranking big fish off the bottom.
Line and drag
Check the spool capacity in PE or lb/braid rather than mono — most Australian anglers fish braid. And remember the drag rating is the maximum: for smooth performance you'll fish most reels well inside it.
